Very enjoyable By L. Arnold on June 7, 2014
I first read this 35 years ago. It made a big enough impression on me that I immediately remembered it when I saw it on Amazon. That's rare. I read a great deal, and to remember a book I read as a teenager doesn't happen often. I bought it and am very glad I did. The book does a great job showing the bond between a dog and their owner. It is very much a book of its time ( the early sixties through early 70's). It's a very charming read. It begins with her wish for a dog, buying the puppy, convincing her husband it was a good idea and the subsequent years living with what is basically a furry child. Quite humorous in places, touching in others. If you're a dog lover, you'll find something here to relate to.
The book I have read 10+ times that always makes me LOL! By Kelly P on February 26, 2013 This is my all time favorite book that I read every couple of years, since 1964, and each time I do, I still laugh out loud even though I have read it so many times. I have also owned 9 copies of it because I lend it and never get it back. I was not a poodle owner until 1976, years after I read the book, but found everything she wrote about Josephine was true. And I could identify with so much that went on in her life because I grew up in the 50s, in Massapequa (Long Island), and spent a lot of time in New York City. I now have 6 poodles and with their own personalities, but are still so much like Josephine. So if you are contemplating getting a poodle read this book and then decide. And make sure you have a lot of time because it is very hard to put down.
A must for every small poodle owner By Laura A. Larkin on November 24, 2010
This book is for anyone who has ever lived with a poodle. I grew up with 2 toy poodles and Ms Susann nailed the poodle mania that hit America in the 60s and early 70s. Her only non-fiction book is a hilarious romp through Ms Susann's life with a small black furry dynamo that converted her into a confirmed dog lover, or rather poodle lover. Along the way we can read about how not to get a sample of pee for the vet, how some lucky people in upstate New York met Jackie Gleason, how Lastone Hershkowitz got her unconventional name. This has been my favorite book since I read in back in the 70s, and if you're a dog lover, it will probably be one of yours too.
A book I had remembered By Kenneth A. Burkenheim on January 21, 2013
It is a humorous look at the life of a dog. I remembered it when my wife was enjoying our current pets. I was disappointed that it wasn't in print. Such a good book should have been. It was the only humorous book Jacqueline Susan wrote, and I regret that she didn't write any others. My wife enjoyed it as well as I was hoping. I was hoping it was available in e=book form, as she is hard on books and this one was old.
